Great Britain. Penny, ND. S.1086. Edward The Elder, King of the West Saxons 899-924. Portrait type. Obverse with draped stylized bust of king facing left: EADVVEA REX. Reverse, NEIOCR IIEICIO. This extremely rare variety is struck on an exceptionally round flan, well centered and mint state. Possibly the finest known example of this rare type, and one of the finest Anglo Saxon rarities to appear in the market place. The surfaces have underlying original luster and there is no evidence that this coin ever circulated. With a catalogue price of £5250 (approaching $7000) in Very Fine, there is no price for any higher grade. A remarkable and excessively rare item. NGC graded MS-62. WINGS. * Edward was the son of Alfred The Great, and proved to be an equally great warrior and administrator. He drove the Danes out of York and East Anglia, though the Norse moved into the vacuum which was left.
Born around 875 AD, Edward became king of the Anglo Saxons upon the death of his father Alfred in 899. In 900 AD he was crowned at Kingston - upon - Thames and the following year he took the title 'King of the angles and Saxons.
