* During the war with Napoleonic France, at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries there was a shortage of silver coinage in England. No Crown pieces had been issued for George III and he had occupied the throne since 1760. As an emergency measure Spanish 'Dollars' were put into circulation for a short period after being countermarked in order for them to become currency. It was not until 1816 that the regular coining of Crown pieces was resumed, when the Royal Mint was moved from its old base in the Tower of London to a new site on Tower Hill, London.
