*This is an excessively rare piece produced by Reginald Huth (1853-1926). Huth was an eccentric numismatist and a member of a family of financiers in the City of London. From an Irish numismatic history viewpoint he is best known for his patterns of 1900 when he commemorated Queen Victoria's visit to Ireland with a series of superbly detailed pattern Double Florins, Three Shillings and Forty Pence coins. He eventually commissioned a small selection of pattern Double Florins, Twelve Groats and smaller 'Octorino' (Eight Pence) coins in the early years of George V's reign. Huth campaigned for the reintroduction of the silver Double Florin coin which sadly was never seen in circulation again after 1890. He also produced several stunning patterns for Hawaii and Spain, which are now avidly collected items.
