Shield Nickels
1866 5C Rays MS66+ NGC. The first-year With Rays Shield nickels presented nothing but problems for Mint employees, either from the new design itself or from the rock-hard nickel/copper alloy that proved intractable for mint equipment and dies. This lustrous and high-end Premium Gem is as attractive and highly graded as can be found for the issue. Tied for finest at either service by virtue of the Plus designation, the lustrous silverlike surfaces gleam with traces of clear golden toning. The strike is extremely sharp for a With Rays nickel, defying numerous bold die cracks on both sides. There are no significant marks or abrasions from post-Mint handling.
