Liberty Nickels
1884 5C MS66 PCGS. We seldom see a Liberty nickel with the extreme eye appeal and surface quality of this beautifully toned 1884. The fields are more satiny than frosted, and when viewed at the right angle they display a large degree of cameo contrast. Viewed otherwise, the full colorful effect of the toning captures the eye: Lavender at the margins, ceding to autumn-gold and champagne centers. Fully struck on both sides, there are no detractions. Two planchet flakes at TE of UNITED are minor and can be ascribed to the Mint's ongoing struggle with the hard nickel flans. Population: 42 in 66 (9 in 66+), 1 finer (1/17).
