Buffalo Nickels
1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS63 PCGS. The Three-Legged Buffalo is one of those few coins that have attained "urban legend" status; even the most green numismatic neophyte has heard of this issue, probably ranking it alongside the famous 1943 copper "pennies." The issue is simply impossible to keep in stock at coin shows, as they fly out of dealers' cases much faster than they can be restocked. David Lange's reference calls the issue "scarce" in Mint State, although this may itself be a bit of a stretch, since PCGS has certified more than 1,000 Mint State examples (undoubtedly including resubmissions). The present lovely example has decent luster for the issue -- the eroded state of the dies diffuses the reflected light -- and a light patina of gold and heather on both sides. There are no mentionable distractions. Certified in a green-label PCGS holder.
