Proof Jefferson Nickels
1939 5C Reverse of 1938 PR68 NGC. While the vast majority of 1939 proofs are the Reverse of 1938 variant (with "wavy steps" on Monticello), the distinction is for practical purposes moot at the conditional rarity of this Superb Gem proof. Only about a dozen PR68 coins of both varieties combined exist, of which only one is the Reverse of 1940. The rest are the Reverse of 1938 such as this example. Glimmering mirrored surfaces surround the lightly frosted devices with iridescent toning in the fields. Glimpses of steel-blue, lilac, rose, and wheat-gold shades embellish surfaces that are virtually free of marks. A microscopic dimple hidden near the back of Jefferson's collar serves as a useful pedigree marker. Census (Reverse of 1938): 2 in 68, 0 finer (1/17).
