Flying Eagle Cents
1857 1C MS66 PCGS. The Act of February 21, 1857 abolished the half cent, repealed the legal tender status of foreign fractional silver coins, and altered the weight, diameter, and composition of the cent. It read:

"... the standard weight of the cent coined at the mint shall be seventy-two grains, or three twentieths of one ounce troy, with no greater deviation than four grains in each piece; and said cent shall be composed of eighty-eight per centum of copper and twelve per centum of nickel, of such shape and device as may be fixed by the director of the mint... ."

New devices included Longacre's Flying Eagle on the obverse and a wreath of corn, wheat, cotton, and tobacco on the reverse. The 1857 was the first regular-issue small cent, struck to the extent of 17.4 million coins. Incredibly, the technical preservation of this tan-gold Premium Gem is unsurpassed. Each side is completely void of mentionable distractions. Strike softness occurs peripherally, as usual. Population: 17 in 66, 0 finer (1/17).
