Proof Indian Cents
1877 1C PR65 Red and Brown NGC. As the key circulation strike of the series, the 1877 Indian cent proofs enjoy a "coattail effect" similar to low-mintage issues across other denominations, where the proof production is more or less normal but the issue itself is rare overall. Often, high-grade proofs are used to fill out business strike sets, increasing demand in both formats. The actual proof mintage of 1877 cents is a subject of debate, with the 2017 Guide Book reporting 1,250 to 1,500 pieces struck. Indian cent authority Rick Snow suggests some of the proofs were possibly destroyed as unsold or released into circulation. In any case, the fortunate bidder for this Red and Brown Gem proof will acquire a splendid example -- needle-sharp and resplendently toned -- with blaze-red color at the mirrored margins, accented by purple/blue central patina. Census: 68 in 65 Red and Brown, 19 finer (1/17).
