Lincoln Cents
1909-S 1C VDB MS67 Red PCGS Secure. The present Superb Gem Red PCGS 1909-S VDB cent would represent the pinnacle of collecting for even many well-heeled collectors, as these coins in such a grade represent the few finest ever certified of this most-in-demand Lincoln cent issue. As of this writing, PCGS reports only 15 submissions in this grade -- and we highly doubt that all of those are separate coins.
The accompanying photo, as well as the PCGS TrueView for this coin, shows off the admirable virtues of this piece. Crisp, rolling luster is the foremost attribute, at least the one that catches our eye first -- far more powerful than usually seen, as befits an extraordinary example. The color varies, strictly within the Red parameter, from light gold to orange to brownish-orange, but there are only a few microscopic flecks, and merely a few areas of darker or lighter toning. The strike is close to full throughout, with no identifiable problem areas. And the preservation is just marvelous. It is seldom indeed that one sees an example of this key date so free of even the smallest reportable ticks.
The acquisition of a nice Gem Red 1909-S VDB -- or, for that matter, a well-circulated but problem-free specimen -- has been the dream of innumerable collectors of Lincoln cents for several generations. For those who really want to collect "one of everything," it bears reminding that there are four different positions known for the S mintmark; while that is a useful tool for authentication, we know of few collectors who have systematically sought out one of each position.
A recent example of this date that we offered in the exact grade and service was lot 5260 our in FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2016), which brought $94,000. This is, indeed, a collector's dream coin. Population: 15 in 67 Red, 0 finer (12/16).
