Two Cent Pieces
1872 2C MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. The odd-denomination two cent piece was long out of favor by 1872, and only 65,000 pieces were minted. This tiny issue would be the last business-strike coinage for the denomination, which was struck in proof format the following year and discontinued. The present example is an impressive Gem with sharply detailed design elements and reflective prooflike fields. Fine definition is observed on many leaf veins and the ribbon bow, while the surfaces show intermingled areas of copper-gold and light brown. Population: 17 in 65 (2 in 65+) Red and Brown, 3 finer. CAC: 14 in 65, 2 finer (1/17).
