Proof Two Cent Pieces
1867 2C PR66 Red Cameo NGC. The 2017 Guide Book gives the mintage of 1867 proof two cent pieces as 625+ pieces. Apparently, 625 examples were issued with the regular proof sets, distributed from February through June, and an unknown number were included in separately sold minor proof sets (Kevin Flynn found letters in the National Archives enumerating more than 80 minor proof sets that were sold through the mail in 1867). While the 1867 can be found in lower grades with a little patience, examples with the Red designation and Cameo surfaces are very rare.
The present coin is the sole finest Red Cameo certified, with sharply detailed design elements and deeply mirrored fields that contrast boldly with the frosty devices. The impeccably preserved original red surfaces are undimmed and overall eye appeal is terrific. Census: 1 in 66 Red Cameo, 0 finer (1/17).
