Three Cent Nickels
1883 3CN MS66 PCGS. In 1883, the output of three cent nickel coins dropped to its lowest point since the denomination was introduced in 1865. The production of merely 4,000 pieces was well-founded, for three cent nickels were abundant and unpopular among the public, and they failed to circulate. PCGS has only seen 135 submissions for the 1883, including 45 examples in Mint State. A significant majority of Uncirculated coins grade between MS62 and MS64. As one might expect, survivors of this caliber are very rare. This exceptional Premium Gem retains complete brilliant and offers a pinpoint impression, particularly on the olive leaves and denomination. A single dark spot occurs on the lower serif of the D in UNITED. Each side is smooth and unmarked. A high-end piece for the grade. Population: 6 in 66, 4 finer (1/17).
