Proof Three Cent Nickels
1888 3CN PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Walter Breen wrote in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins about the 1888 proof three cent pieces, "Some of these are so dull as to be almost indistinguishable from business strikes; and conversely, some business strikes have attractive proof surfaces. The series is enough in the doldrums that nobody particularly cares." Breen must not have seen this coin.
It exhibits profoundly deep, brilliantly reflective fields. The devices display heavy frost against the pristine, smoothly reflective mirrors. Completely untoned, the Superb Gem surfaces present no spots, ticks, or other distractions to the naked eye. Even under magnification, only the most trivial minutiae are found, including a tiny luster break on the chin, a single dark fleck near the rim, and a couple of ticks on the eyebrow. On the reverse, a tiny indentation near the leftmost I appears to be a planchet flake. All are trivial and this coin is incredibly appealing -- virtually unimprovable --since neither service has seen one numerically finer. Population: 3 in 67 Deep Cameo, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 67, 0 finer (1/17).
