Buffalo Nickels
1924-S 5C MS65 NGC. Well struck for this elusive S-mint Buffalo. Most examples are softly defined over the high points, especially the bison's horn. This particular piece is almost indistinguishable from a Philadelphia coin, which is saying a lot for this issue. The satiny surfaces are bathed in delicate golden patina, and there are no mentionable abrasions on either side. Although minted in larger quantities than the '26-S, the '24-S is another rare issue in Gem condition. Currently, NGC has certified 19 examples in MS65, with three finer; while PCGS has graded 40 specimens at the Gem level, also with three finer (1/17).
