Buffalo Nickels
1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS65 NGC. The Three-Legged nickel was discovered relatively early after issue. The first mention in the Numismatist occurs on page 751 of the September 1939 issue. The July 12, 1939 meeting of the Heart of America Numismatic Association recorded that "Oliver M. Arnold, from Denver, sent an oddity, a three-legged Buffalo nickel." Word must have spread quickly, since a significant number were saved in lightly circulated grades. Uncirculated pieces, especially Gems, are rare relative to demand. The present lustrous golden-brown and gunmetal-blue example is nicely struck and free from discernible marks. Census: 59 in 65 (1 in 65+), 23 finer (1/17).
