Early Half Dimes
1800 H10C V-3, LM-2, R.7 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine Secure. AU Details. Here is an extremely rare offering, indeed. It is an example of the R.7 V-3, LM-2 1800 half dime, one of an estimated five to 12 pieces known. Our Permanent Auction Archives dating back to 1993 show only three prior appearances: a VF30 example in 2014, which realized $9,987.50, a damaged PCGS Genuine coin that brought $1,207.50 in 2011, and the bent Jules Reiver specimen with Fine Details that sold for $7,475 in 2006. Other appearances are scant. Stack's Bowers offered the former Reiver coin again in 2011 in a Fine 12 PCGS holder. Dealer Rich Uhrich currently lists an EF Details example in his inventory. The NGC Census reports a single AU58 coin, the finest known example, while PCGS shows two additional coins in VG8 and VG10.
This AU Details representative, second on the Condition Census, is mostly brilliant with a moderately subdued appearance. The noted cleaning hardly detracts at all from an aesthetic perspective and is entirely unimportant considering the coin's absolute rarity. The strike is bold around the rims and somewhat light over the centers. Clash marks occur near stars 11 to 13. The significance of this offering cannot be overstated. It is the finest example ever offered publicly. Expect spirited bidding from advanced specialists.
