Early Dimes
1807 10C JR-1, R.2, MS64 PCGS. Mint records report a mintage of 165,000 dimes in 1807, all delivered in the first two quarters of the year. Interestingly, only one die variety is known for the issue, and it is possible that about 40,000 to 50,000 of the coins delivered in the first quarter were actually dated 1805. The reverse die for the 1807 dime was previously employed for several quarter eagle coinages.
The present coin shows the usual clash marks on each side, though neither die is cracked, evidence that this piece was struck early in the production run. The central devices are boldly defined, although the left obverse and reverse borders are weak an uneven strike, as is normal for the issue. The centers exhibit pale golden-gray toning, while the margins display attractive aquamarine and olive-gold hues. The surfaces are unusually clean for the grade, giving this piece exceptional eye appeal. Population: 21 in 64 (1 in 64+), 7 finer (1/17).
