Seated Dimes
1884-S 10C F-102, R.3, MS67 PCGS. The 1884-S is one of the scarcer issues among late-date Seated dimes in Mint State. Just over half a million coins were struck, and this issue becomes conditionally rare at the Choice grade level. In MS67, the 1884-S is a premier rarity. PCGS and NGC each show a single finer submission in MS68, possibly representing the same former Pittman-Stellar coin. That coin sold in Part III of the Gardner Collection (Heritage, 5/2015). This example should generate significant interest among Registry specialists looking to assemble the finest possible set.
Frosty and brilliant at the centers with peripheral orange and magenta toning, the surfaces exhibit noticeable reflectivity and are devoid of all but the most trivial marks. A much scarcer date and one of the most impressive examples, technically and aesthetically, that we have offered. Population: 1 in 67, 1 finer (1/17).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2002), lot 5509; Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part IV (Heritage, 10/2015), lot 98291.
