Early Quarters
1804 25C B-1, R.3, VF35 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 3/3. The 1804 is the key issue in the Draped Bust, Large Eagle type. The date is usually seen no more often than the 1796 one-year type, and indeed the two dates have similar reported mintages: 6,146 coins for the 1796, 6,738 pieces for the 1804. Most 1804 quarters are heavily circulated, grading in the low VF or lesser levels. This Choice VF coin is conditionally scarce, and finer examples of the date are rare. Collectors seeking a significant amount of detail but without breaking the bank will want to give this piece close consideration, especially since it will fit in nicely with an otherwise XF date or type collection. It shows excellent hair and feather detail in the centers, and the rims are bold. The stars and clouds immediately above the eagle's head show the only mentionable strike weakness. Several obverse peripheral stars may have been incompletely struck, but grade-consistent wear gives them all a uniform appearance. Population: 12 in 35, 16 finer (1/17).
