Seated Quarters
1856-S 25C MS62 PCGS. Briggs 1-B. With merely a dozen Mint State grading events at the two services combined, there can be little argument over the conditional rarity of the 1856-S quarters. The mintage was small to begin with -- just 286,000 pieces -- and the coins were soon immersed in the small change-starved West Coast commerce, where most were lost to attrition.
The coin displays faint, pale-blue color with equally faint peach-gold at the borders, sprinkled with golden-gray accents. Mint luster shines through the light patina. A few minor surface abrasions are visible with a glass. The star centers, Liberty's hair strands, and the eagle's plumage confirm a tack-sharp strike. This MS62 example is one of five pieces so-graded at PCGS, with 16 examples reported in finer grades (2/16).
