Proof Seated Quarters
1865 25C PR68 NGC. Briggs 3-B. All 1865 proof quarters are of the Briggs 3-B variety. The obverse proof die exhibits rust in the field to the left of the rock, and the base of 1 in the date is thinner than on the business strikes. This 1865 proof quarter was struck during the last year of the Civil War. It was not only the circulation-strike mintages that suffered while the conflict raged. Even proof emissions were lower -- in the case of 1865, only 500 proof coins plus a meager complement of 58,800 pieces for purported circulation. This is in contrast to 1,000 proofs plus more than 800,000 business strikes for the 1860 quarters, struck the year before the war began.
Auburn toning blankets Liberty, contrasting with the surrounding charcoal surfaces. There is a partial print mark in the right field. The reverse is an even sea-green throughout, and there are no abrasions of note on either side. The strike is needle-sharp and the star centers, so often a problem in the Liberty Seated quarter series, are completely delineated. Census: 2 in 68, 0 finer (1/17).
