Standing Liberty Quarters
1916 25C MS62 Full Head NGC. The 20th century in U.S. numismatics supplies collectors with several series that are decidedly on the short side, especially when compared with their 19th century predecessors. The Standing Liberty series stands alone as the shortest regular-issue subsidiary silver series of the 20th century -- although it is far from an easily completed one. Elusive dates include the famous 1918/7-S, the 1923-S, and the 1927-S, but none of them challenge the 1916 as the undisputed key to the series. Only 52,500 Standing Liberty quarters were manufactured in mid-December 1916. The coins were introduced alongside 1917-dated pieces, and many went unnoticed -- and unsaved -- as a result. This is a bright example with shimmering mint luster. The fields show the usual granularity and there are few abrasions evident. Sharply defined throughout.
