Standing Liberty Quarters
1927-S 25C MS67 PCGS. There are many dates in the Standing Liberty quarter series that are rare in Mint State Full Head, but the 1927-S is one of the few issues that is also scarce in non-Full Head Uncirculated grades. The 1927-S had a small mintage of only 396,000 pieces. In perspective, this was fewer coins than there were residents of San Francisco in 1927. Any Uncirculated survivor is a prize acquisition for the series enthusiast, although Premium Gems or finer coins are especially scarce; it has been almost eight years since we last offered a Superb Gem example of this classic S-mint key.
The present coin is something special. Frosty luster illuminates the fields and unabraded surfaces. Were it not for a couple of tiny ticks on Liberty's knee, an even finer grade might have been achieved. Liberty's head and the shield rivets show typical weakness, although the overall strike is above-average for the issue. The 1927-S is extremely rare this fine and unknown numerically finer. Population: 6 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer (1/17).
