Early Half Dollars
1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem, O-121, T-29, R.4, AU58 ★ NGC. Tompkins Die State 4/1. Struck from the latest die state described in the 2015 Tompkins reference, this extraordinary near-Mint early half commands immediate attention for its still-lustrous, colorful toning. Cerulean-blue and amber-gold shades combine for dramatic eye appeal, confirmed by the coveted NGC Star designation. Nearly full mint luster glows beneath the rich patina. Equally dramatic die cracks circumnavigate the obverse margin and venture radially into the fields and portrait. Multiple die clashing foreshadows the demise of the obverse die in its final use for the O-121 (T-29) variety. Light wear and scattered small marks from circulation are seen with a loupe, but this example ranks as a solid second in the Condition Census for the variety according to all of the major references.
