Seated Half Dollars
1859-S 50C Medium S, WB-102, Die Pair 6, R.3, MS64+ NGC. Ex: Highland Collection. Gem coins are rare for the 1859 San Francisco issue, making this Plus-graded near-Gem particularly attractive for the value-conscious collector. Mint luster shines boldly through a thin patina of pale almond-gold toning with an area of deeper patina near star 7. An unusual M-shaped inventory mark appears to the left of the eagle's head -- one of three such examples we are aware of on 1859-S Seated halves that were part of the Highland Collection (the other pieces were marked with a 'V' and an 'X'). Census (all varieties): 13 in 64 (6 in 64+), 5 finer (1/17).
