Seated Half Dollars
1882 50C WB-101, MS67 Prooflike NGC. Mirrored surfaces surround lightly frosted central elements with light, reddish-gold toning that deepens at the borders, there joined by a few steel-blue accents. The strike is sharp throughout this lustrous Superb Gem. The late-series Seated halves often require collectors to settle for a proof rather than a business strike in high grades. The low mintage of 4,400 pieces for circulation suggests several prooflike survivors may exist, but PCGS historically has not identified prooflike half dollars and NGC recognizes fewer than a dozen pieces in either Prooflike or Deep Prooflike format. Importantly, the present coin is the finest in either category (1/17). Census: 1 in 67 Prooflike, 0 finer (1/17).
