Barber Half Dollars
1893 50C MS67 NGC. Brilliant-white and entirely untoned, this high-luster Barber half has a fresh-from-the-Mint look, yet it is one of the favored pre-1900 series issues. The glittering, frosty surfaces coruscate with incredible eye appeal. Both obverse and reverse show no distractions and appear only a tiny tick or two away from an even higher grade. The strike is crisp as can be -- including the often-troublesome areas on the reverse -- which are razor-sharp as well.
There are, of course, no finer pieces listed from either service. Both PCGS and NGC record a single MS67 example and, interestingly, both are brilliant (or nearly so) coins. We believe the present coin outshines its rival, but that is for the eye of the beholder. Given the overall scarcity of 1893 halves in Gem or finer grades, it is unlikely to see a comparable or finer example going forward. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (1/17).
