Barber Half Dollars
1899-O 50C MS66 NGC. CAC. Although the 1899-O Barber half is not as elusive as its predecessor (the 1898-O), it comes as no surprise because its mintage is roughly twice as large. Even so, few pieces survive at the Premium Gem level of the present coin. Eye appeal abounds on each side, and there are no mentionable signs of contact. The right shield corner on the reverse shows the seemingly unavoidable O-Mint weak strike, as do the wing nearby and the right (facing) claw, but otherwise there are no quibbles on this splendid MS66 coin. Mostly silver in the centers, coruscating luster complements a pleasing peripheral ring of amber-gold.
An MS67 entry that was formerly in the NGC population data has now been delisted, and that service currently shows only seven submissions in MS66 as the finest. PCGS shows three in MS66+ as the finest, including the Akers-Duckor example that we offered in August 2010, lot 3195, which brought $25,300. Census: 7 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 7 in 66, 0 finer (1/17).
