1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-15, BB-112, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. This Large Eagle type coin displays a sharp, even strike without planchet adjustment marks or other distractions. Slight high-point friction is discernible with a loupe, and each side displays deep, original mottled olive-green and golden-gray toning -- suitable for the collector seeking an old-time look. BB-112 is a fairly plentiful Draped Bust, Large Eagle dollar variety, although pieces appearing at auction in recent years have been largely concentrated in XF and lower grades, with occasional offerings in the lower AU range. This Choice AU coin is conditionally scarce. Bowers writes of the BB-112 die pairing in his silver dollar Encyclopedia: "AU or finer pieces are very rare." The scarcity of such coins appearing at auction seems to substantiate that assessment.
