Seated Dollars
1850 $1 MS62 PCGS. OC-1, R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/e. All of the 1850s-decade Seated dollar issues are more-or-less rare in Mint State grades, save for the 1859-O date (and for that matter, its sibling 1860-O). For the 1850 issue, no more than perhaps two to three dozen pieces survive today in all Mint State levels from a mintage of just 7,500 pieces. Most Uncirculated examples grade only MS60. The surfaces of this specimen are prooflike beneath intense heather, blue, and iridescent toning. A few minor contact marks keep it from the extremely rare Select grade level. This coin poses a rare opportunity for Seated dollar specialists, as series that is both challenging and rewarding in equal measure. Population: 8 in 62, 11 finer (1/17).
