The generous mintage of nearly 10 million pieces for the 1877-S Trade dollar issue and more than 4 million for the 1878-S can be viewed in hindsight as the last great gasp of this interesting silver dollar series. Comparable Gem 1877-S dollars appear far less often than expected, since many were melted after legal tender status was lost.
