Morgan Dollars
1893-CC $1 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Between 120,000 and 150,000 silver dollars were struck each month at the Carson City Mint in 1893 from January through May, totaling 677,000 pieces in total. Production was ceased on May 23rd, according to Dave Bowers' Guide Book, fifth edition, although the Carson City Mint was not officially abolished until 1899. More than 5 million Carson City dollars -- including likely many 1893 coins -- were removed from storage at Carson City in late 1899 and early 1900, and transferred to the San Francisco Mint and the U.S. Treasury Building in Washington D.C. Some may have been destroyed in the Pittman Act melts of 1918, and others were distributed through traditional channels. By the time of the GSA sales of the early 1970s, government supplies of the 1893-CC Morgan had dwindled to a single coin. Today, the 1893-CC is scarce in high grade and rarely seen above the Choice grade level.
The present coin displays a bold strike and frosty, brilliant mint luster. A few light marks on the cheek limit the grade but are not severe. The Plus designation and CAC green label give this piece heightened appeal. PCGS reports 15 finer representatives (1/17).
