Peace Dollars
1923-D $1 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. As a whole, and compared to the earlier and longer-produced Morgan type, the Peace dollar series is easily collectible in its entirety. The challenge comes when one attempts to assemble a Premium Gem or better collection, as most dates become scarce or even rare at this grade level. The 1923-D is an excellent example of a date that is available through MS65 but seldom offered finer. Barely more than 100 pieces are reported by PCGS in MS66 and better condition, topped by five in MS66+ and one in MS67. Collectors hoping to be saved by crossing over into the NGC-certified population will find a strikingly smaller tally from that service, which lists only 29 Premium Gems (just one of which is Plus-designated) and no MS67s. Moreover, collectors seeking a CAC-endorsed coin for Registry purposes have only 26 Premium Gems from which to choose, with none finer (12/16). Thus, the importance of the present offering becomes blatantly clear; this high-end 1923-D Peace dollar is effectively within the Condition Census and it is an extreme rarity. Aesthetic highlights include a sharp strike and frosty luster cast in mottled multicolor toning on the reverse with peripheral amber-gold on the obverse. A loupe finds Liberty's cheek and the adjacent field pleasantly devoid of serious abrasions.
