Gold Dollars
1850-C G$1 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1. Easily among the scarcest gold dollars from the Charlotte Mint, the 1850-C saw a mintage of 6,956 pieces. Only the 1859-C shows a lower mintage in the 9-issue C-Mint series (excluding the legendary 1849-C Open Wreath, which is a variety rather than a separate issue). Doug Winter estimates between 150 and 250 pieces of the 1850-C survive in all grades.
This example is undeniably sharp and attractive. Greenish-gold surfaces display semiprooflike fields and a sharp strike -- including the hair near the eye, ear, and at the top of the head. The star centers are also sharp. The reverse lettering and wreath are crisply struck. Lilac accents visit the smooth fields that show angled striations from die polishing. The eye appeal is quite strong. Population: 7 in 62 (1 in 62+), 3 finer (1/17).
