Early Quarter Eagles
1802/1 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4 -- Tooled, Repaired, Cleaned -- ANACS. XF40 Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. This is an evenly struck example with bold border regions and slight weakness on the central high points. The coin presents as pale yellow-gold and smooth to the unaided eye, although a 10x loupe reveals surprisingly well-hidden tooling marks in all of the fields with light cleaning overall. The faint remnants of what appears to be a hand-scratched date (1821?) can be seen in the field to the right of the primary date, not completely effaced by the repair work. BD-1 is scarce in all grades with only 90 to 120 pieces believed known. This coin is much more appealing than the holder notations would suggest.
