Proof Liberty Quarter Eagles
1903 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. Switching to all-brilliant proof finishes in 1902, the Mint continued with the practice in 1903 and, in fact, through 1909 until it embarked on other experimental proof finishes. At the time, the collecting public offered little resistance to the new format and 197 proofs were struck -- about a normal number for the era, of which perhaps half that number survive.
This glittering example is razor-sharp and seemingly without fault. The mirrored fields are dramatically deep with enticing, well-preserved surfaces. A hint of orange toning at the rims frames the vibrant, rich-gold coloration. We note a tiny alloy mark in the dentils beneath star 13 and a faint, whisker-thin lintmark across the bust truncation above 19 in the date -- both Mint-related characteristics, of extremely minor consideration. Population: 10 in 66, 1 finer (1/17).
