Early Half Eagles
1803/2 $5 BD-1, R.4, MS62 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b, the initial state with two light cracks on the reverse from the die's prior use coining the 1802/1 BD-7. A beautiful peach-gold representative. The reverse is remarkably devoid of contact, and the obverse shows only wispy marks on the left field. The strike is bold save for incompleteness near the eagle's war claw. Certain to command a premium on the auction floor. Certified in a prior generation holder. All four 1803-dated die varieties are overdates. Three varieties, including BD-1, share the same obverse die, distinguished by a broken foot on the T in LIBERTY. The reverse of BD-1 is distinguished by a bold crack through the TED in UNITED.
