Early Half Eagles
1807 $5 Bust Right, BD-6, High R.4, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. The Capped Bust Right design was retired partway through the year in 1807, after a mintage of 32,488 half eagles had been accomplished. Six die varieties are known for the date and type. This coin represents the final BD-6 variety, with the curl tip above the recut 1 in the date and the final A in AMERICA touching the eagle's claw on the reverse. The BD-6 is a very scarce variety, with a surviving population of 80-100 pieces in all grades, but it is still seen more often than the other 1807 Bust Right varieties. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to strike the BD-4 and BD-5 varieties of this date.
The coin offered here is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with just a trace of actual wear on the well-detailed design elements. Some detail has been lost in selected areas (like the A in STATES and cloud 3), due to lapping. A long die crack is evident on the reverse, from the serif of N, through the arrows and shield, up into the stars. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and retain traces of original mint luster.
