1838-D $5 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Variety 1-A. Always in demand as a first-year type coin, the 1838-D is the only Classic Head half eagle from the Dahlonega Mint. This pleasing orange-gold specimen features strongly impressed design elements, but some detail is incomplete, due to lapping. Only light wear is evident, and the surfaces are lightly abraded, but the luster is dulled by the effects of a cleaning long ago.
