Liberty Half Eagles
1839-D $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The usual variety has the D placed further right over the left edge of the 9. The 1839-D enjoys strong demand from a variety of collectors as the first year of issue in the half eagle series, a single-year type with the obverse mintmark placement, and as a product of the popular Dahlonega facility. Adding to the issue's popularity and explaining its absolute scarcity is its mintage of only 18,939 coins. This reddish-gold Choice XF survivor is well-detailed with a surprisingly smooth obverse. Scattered ticks and rim nicks occur at the upper reverse.
