Liberty Half Eagles
1840-D $5 Tall D AU53 PCGS. Variety 3-B. A die gouge protrudes from the dentils below star 13. The mintmark was moved to the reverse of the half eagle in 1840. The Dahlonega issue of this year is known with both a tall and short mintmark, the former represented here. This AU piece displays bright yellow-gold patina and strong detail. Light surface chatter is typical for the issue but does not show any major abrasions. Doug Winter estimates that only 150 to 175 examples of this issue are known, mostly in VF and XF grades. Population: 8 in 53, 17 finer (1/17).
