Liberty Half Eagles
1842-C $5 Small Date AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1842-C Small Date half eagle is even more elusive than its Large Date counterpart. In fact, with a mintage of 4,595 pieces, the 1842-C Small Date is the rarest half eagle from the Charlotte Mint, and the second-rarest C-mint coin of any denomination, behind the famous 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar. The Small Date coins were probably struck first, as the date size matches that on the 1841-dated half eagles from this mint. This coin may be one of the 2,555 coins struck on March 22, 1842, as it shows just the earliest vestiges of a rim cud that formed on the obverse at 12 o'clock in later die states.
The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with just a trace of wear on the high points of the well-detailed design elements. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and the overall presentation is most attractive. Census: 8 in 58, 5 finer (12/16).
