Liberty Half Eagles
1860-D $5 Large D AU53 PCGS. Variety 46-FF. The penultimate production of Dahlonega half eagles was a meager mintage of 14,635 pieces. Surprisingly, three die varieties are known. Most survivors are Variety 46-GG with a Medium D mintmark. The two Large D die pairs, Variety 46-EE and 46-FF, are rarely encountered. The present apricot-gold Large D example lacks any noticeable marks, and will please the veteran specialist. The strike shows blending on the curls, fletchings, and eagle's neck, usual for the remote Southern branch facility.
