Liberty Half Eagles
1863 $5 AU55 NGC. Half eagle coinage at the Philadelphia Mint was negligible during the Civil War, as such coins were immediately hoarded by the public rather than allowed to circulate in commerce. Total production for the denomination in 1863 was only 2,442 pieces. The often-cited PCGS estimate is that only 30 to 40 examples are extant in all grades. NGC and PCGS combined report 52 submissions, but this figure likely includes some duplication. In more than two decades, we have handled only 20 examples of this date, suggesting that the PCGS survival estimate may be accurate. Just three coins have been reported in Mint State, none finer than MS61.
This Choice AU representative displays sharp design elements and lightly abraded yellow-gold surfaces. Semiprooflike mirroring remains in the protected regions of the fields. Rarely is this Philadelphia issue available, let along in such high of a grade. Census: 4 in 55, 7 finer (12/16).
