Liberty Half Eagles
1863-S $5 AU53 NGC. Precious-metal coinage was widely hoarded and exported during the Civil War era, leading to reduced mintages of most denominations throughout this time period. Only 17,000 Liberty half eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1863 and few high-grade examples were saved by contemporary collectors. Probably no more than 60-75 specimens survive today in all grades.
This impressive AU53 representative shows light wear on the well-detailed design elements and the pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded. Traces of original mint luster are evident on both sides and the overall presentation is most attractive. Census: 4 in 53, 14 finer (1/17).
