Indian Half Eagles
1911-D $5 MS62 PCGS. From a memorably small 20th century mintage of 72,500 pieces, the 1911-D Indian half eagle is one of the most challenging issues of the series in all grades. Outside of series specialists, the 1911-D has always been overshadowed by its more famous quarter eagle counterpart, but collectors have begun to recognize the elusive nature of this issue in recent years. Even at the MS62 grade level, the 1911-D is a very scarce coin.
The present coin is an attractive MS62 specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and lustrous yellow and orange-gold surfaces, with scattered, minor contact marks on both sides. Population: 69 in 62 (2 in 62+), 56 finer (1/17).
