Early Eagles
1799 $10 Small Obverse Stars, BD-5, R.6 -- Obverse Scratched, Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. XF Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a, as always. The vast majority of 1799 gold eagles known represent the BD-7 or BD-10 die pairings. The other eight varieties are either rare or extremely rare. BD-5 survives to the extent of only 22 to 30 pieces in all grades. This is the second of three uses for the obverse die but the only use for the reverse. Variety collectors have little room to be picky about quality when it comes to acquiring an example of this rare die pairing. The present coin displays a bold, even strike with XF-level high-point wear. The surfaces are cleaned but display uniform straw-gold color. A faint vertical scratch in the left obverse field is noted on the holder insert.
