Liberty Eagles
1862 $10 AU55 NGC. Mintage of gold eagles declined dramatically in 1862, due to widespread hoarding and exportation of precious-metal coinage that continued throughout the Civil War era. Only 10,995 ten dollar gold coins were struck in 1862, and few were saved for numismatic purposes. This Choice AU specimen shows just a touch of light wear on the well-detailed design elements and the lightly abraded lemon-yellow surfaces retain significant traces of original mint luster. Census: 17 in 55, 15 finer (1/17).
