Liberty Eagles
1868 $10 MS61 PCGS. The 1868 Liberty eagle claims a mintage of just 10,630 pieces, a memorably small production total in absolute terms, but actually larger than most ten dollar gold mintages of the period. The issue can be located in lower circulated grades with some patience, but Mint State specimens are extremely rare. When David Hall put together his set of Liberty eagles (2005-2010), he had to settle for a nice AU58 specimen of this date, as only one single Mint State example was publicly offered during that time frame, an impressive MS60 NGC specimen in lot 1489 of the Dallas Signature (Heritage, 12/2005), that realized $18,400. The current price realized record for the 1868 eagle is $25,850, brought by an MS61 PCGS example in a Stack's Bowers auction in May of 2016.
The present coin is an attractive MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements and lightly marked orange-gold surfaces that show some scattered, minor contact marks on both sides. The worst distraction is an unobtrusive rim bruise at 9 o'clock on the obverse. Original satiny mint luster radiates from both sides, adding to the outstanding overall presentation. Population: 3 in 61, 1 finer (1/17).
